How to Look Your Best in a Business Headshot

Wondering how to get the most out of your headshot photo session? Here are some tips from a pro photographer on how to have your own successful headshot shoot.

1. Rest.

You're probably going to be using your business headshot to represent yourself online and in print media for a while to come. It's an investment into your professional image and just like any other type of investment, you must take it seriously.

Nobody wants to portray themselves as frazzled, stressed, or tired! So don't be! Rest the night before the shoot. Take a bubble bath, enjoy a hot cup of tea, and even consider treating yourself to a spa day to get your eyebrows and/or facial hair trimmed. Some people even decide to get their hair cut and colored the day before.

It's worth it to put the time and effort in to make your headshot the best it can be by looking your best.

2. Be Consistent.

Before your photo session is not the time to change your look. Most professionals use their headshots for at least 1 year, some even use the same headshot 5, 10 years later!

Keep your look consistent and don't decide to dramatically change your hair color or cut immediately before your photo session unless you are absolutely certain that you will be sticking with your new look for at least a year.

4. Be Timeless.

Because your business headshot is an investment that you will want to use for a long time, it's a good idea to stick to timeless traditions when making decisions about your outfit, hair, and makeup.

5. Avoid Small & Busy Patterns.

We want the focus to be on YOU, not your outfit.

6. Have Fun!

Don't forget to enjoy the process. Stress and worry don't look good on anyone. If you have any other questions or concerns, keep an open line of communication with your photographer. A professional photographer will always be happy to help you prepare for the shoot. I personally LOVE when clients text me asking me about how to prepare... It shows you care!
